Back in 2012 I had the opportunity to travel and work in East Africa for half a year. Unlike the picture we often see in the „western“ media, i discovered a beautiful, complex and rich world and met proud and independent people. At the same time, i saw with my own eyes what colonialism did and still does to this part of the world, and how I as a white man profit from those colonial structures every day.
The music on the „Bloom & Wither“ EP is a reflection of this time and of my ongoing thoughts about this experience. I know that many people don’t have the possibility to travel, so i hope that with my music i can transfer some of the moods, pictures, emotions and thought processes that i experienced. In the different songs you can hear a lot of field recordings i took while traveling, like screeching birds, waterfalls and talking people. Also, most percussion instruments are made out of these recordings.
I want to give credit to the great people i met and who taught me so much, especially Grace and Amos! Special thanks to Tahnee and Jona for the confidence boost! I wouldn’t have released this project if it weren’t for you!
Artwork made by the fantastic Jona Raischl.
